The Development of Silicone Hydrogels

چکیده

THE STRUCTURE OF hydrogel materials can be described as ‘washingline’ polymers. In this analogy the hydrogels are composed of a long backbone (ie the ‘washing line’) from which a variety of chemical groups may be suspended (the ‘washing’). The function of these chemical groups, or monomers, is to attract and bind water. In conventional hydrogel materials, frequently used monomers include Nvinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), methacrylic acid, and HEMA. The washing lines may be fastened together at intervals by the use of cross-links to give greater physical stability. The same ‘washing line’ principle can also be applied to the silicone hydrogels but groups containing silicon-oxygen bonds (silicones) are attached to increase oxygen permeability.

Elastomeric hydrogels by polymerizing silicone microemulsions.

Robust, transparent elastomeric hydrogels encoded with a bicontinuous structure result from the sequential photopolymerization of the aqueous hydroxyethyl methacrylate phase and crosslinking of the silicone phase of a silicone microemulsion stabilized with an acrylate-functional silicone-poly(ethylene glycol) surfactant.

Structures and Functions of the Vitreous Body

The natural vitreous body has a fine structure and complex functions. The imitation of the natural vitreous body by vitreous substitutes is a challenging work for both researchers and ophthalmologists. Gases, silicone oil, heavy silicone oil and hydrogels, particularly the former two vitreous substitutes are clinically widely used with certain complications. Those, however, are not real artific...

Silicone Hydrogels Materials for Contact Lens Applications

Silicone hydrogel (Si-Hy) materials combine the benefi ts of silicone or siloxane derivates in terms of oxygen permeability and mechanical properties with those of hydrogels in terms of wettability and hidrophilicity. Such properties are critical when it comes to the application at the ocular surface in the form of contact lenses (CL) to correct visual dysfunctions, as bandage mechanism or as d...

Refractive shifts in four selected artificial vitreous substitutes based on Gullstrand-Emsley and Liou-Brennan schematic eyes.

PURPOSE To determine and compare the refractive shifts based on Gullstrand-Emsley and Liou-Brennan schematic eyes after filling them with four selected artificial vitreous substitutes: silicone oil, heavy silicone oil, hydrogels, and encapsuled balanced salt solution. METHODS The optical constants of artificial vitreous body-filled eyes were calculated based on Gullstrand-Emsley and Liou-Bren...

Viscoelastic Properties of Polyacrylamide Nanocomposite Hydrogels Prepared in Electrolyte Media: Effect of Gelant Volume

In this work, nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels based on polyacrylamide/chromium triacetate were prepared at different reaction mixture (gelant) volumes and their crosslinking process and viscoelastic behaviors were studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns taken from the NC hydrogels containing laponite nanoparticles did not show any distinct characteristic basal reflection for all of the NC hy...
